McDonald's Nasi Lemak Burger Unboxing & Review
For a limited time, McDonald's will be offering Nasi Lemak Burgers at their stores nationwide, together with the Chendol McFurry, Bandung McFizz and Coconut Pie. We gave the Nasi Lemak a shot on its debuting day and here is a quick unboxing and review of the SG exclusive Nasi Lemak Burger from McDonald's.
Unboxing - Thumbs Up Man!
Like every burger from McDonald's, the Nasi Lemak Burger comes in its own custom design box. Taking inspiration from the traditional dish, the box features a banana leaf design, which in my opinion is a very smart move.
Lifting the box open, we see the burger wrapped up in a brown piece of paper. Having both a box and a paper wrap seems kind of wasteful in my opinion. Unwrapping the paper, we find the burger, hot and ready to eat.
Specs - One of a Kind
Before we begin with the review, lets get the specs out of the way. The Nasi Lemak Burger is powered by a crispy coconut flavored chicken thigh patty with a fried egg and sweet & spicy sambal sauce. Protecting the contents of the burger are two soft buns. The Nasi Lemak Burger comes in a single veggie configuration: a few slices of cucumber and onions and will cost you S$5.95 a la carte.
The Burger - Looks Delicious, Smells Delicious, Taste Delicious
Lets begin with the most important part of the Nasi Lemak Burger, the fried chicken. McDonald's didn't disappoint with this one. It is juicy, it is crispy, and it taste just like the fired chicken wing you often find in Nasi Lemak! Moving on to the fried egg and chili sauce, both which are vital to the success of the dish. McDonald's nailed the egg; it is soft yet not easy to break. The sauce could be spicier to make the dish more shiok, but overall, it is not bad at all.
The one area that bugs me about the "Nasi Lemak" Burger would be the absence of coconut milk rice, which defines the traditional dish. While the buns are soft and nice, I wish McDonald's had a rice burger variant, which would complete this dish. Looking at the Facebook comments on the McDonald's Singapore page, I notice that I am not the only one that felt this way.
Conclusion - You Should Try One!
At almost $6, the McDonald's Nasi Lemak Burger is one expensive "Nasi Lemak". At the same price, you can get two packets of equally great tasting regular nasi lemak at almost everywhere. That said, it is a really unique experience which you might not get a chance to try once McDonald's stop offering them in about a month. If you love Nasi Lemak, or if you love trying new things, you should definitely give the Nasi Lemak Burger a shot.
